Cleaning Your Drains When They Are Draining Slowly

There are a number of ways to clean your drains, especially if you simply have a small clog in one of your home drains. You can try using a plunger, a drain snake, or a chemical drain cleaner to break up the clog. If you notice a drain letting water down slowly, trying a simple drain cleaning method is your first defense. If you notice that more than one drain is going slow in your home, you are likely to have a systemic problem in the home. When your toilets aren't flushing completely and more than one drain doesn't work properly, you probably have a clog in your main sewer line.

How Your Main Sewer Line Gets Clogged

Your main sewer line can get clogged from debris that are flushed down your toilet or put down the drain that shouldn't be there. For example, you shouldn't be flushing paper towels down the toilet, any sanitary products, or diapers. When you put stuff down your kitchen sink that shouldn't be there, this can add to a main sewer line clog. In general, the biggest culprit for causing a substantial main sewer line blockage is tree roots that have grown through the pipe and into the system.

Cleaning Out Your Main Sewer Line

An amateur plumbing snake is not going to be able to reach your main sewer line and provide you with any help removing a clog. Trying to use chemical drain cleaners isn't going to work either because, by the time the drain cleaner gets to the main sewer line, it is diluted too much to make a difference. If you think your main sewer line is starting to block up, it's important to contact a plumber who will have the right tools necessary to remove the tree roots and allow the line to flow freely again.

If You Ignore the Problem

While you may get away with ignoring slow drains for a little while, eventually the blockage will become complete. When this occurs, waste water will back up into your home. The waste water will come out of any drain or faucet that it can, causing a big mess in your home. You may have sewage come up through your kitchen sink drain, and this will be difficult to clean up.

When you have slow drains, call a plumber before the situation gets out of control. This will end up saving you time and money in the long run. Contact a company like Plumb Care Plumbing to learn more.
